NATIONAL SERVICE SCHEME

National Service Scheme popularly known as NSS, the scheme was launched in Mahatma Gandhi Centenary year 1969 and aimed at developing student’s personality through community service. The overall objective of National Service is educational. This objective is attained through the service to the community.

National Service Scheme (NSS) is a permanent Youth Programme under the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, Government of India and funded by Government of Tamilnadu and Government of India in the ratio 5:7.


OBJECTIVE

The overall objective of NSS is Personality Development through community service.
The broad objectives of NSS are to:
  • Understand the community in which they work.
  • Understand themselves in relation to their community.
  • Identify the needs and problems of the community and involve them in problem solving process.
  • Develop among themselves a sense of social and civic responsibility.
  • Utilize their knowledge in finding practical solution to individual and community problems.
  • Develop competence required for group-living and sharing of responsibilities.
  • Gain skills in mobilizing community participation.
  • Acquire leadership qualities and democratic attitude.
  • Develop capacity to meet emergencies and natural disaster and
  • Practice national integration and social harmony.

NSS IN OUR COLLEGE

The formal inauguration of the V V COLLEGE OF ENGINEERING NSS unit & its activities for the academic year (2012-2013) took place at Conference Hall at 2.00 pm on 08th September 2012 . NSS Programme Officer Mr. A. Bright (Asst. Prof., Chemistry, VV College of Engineering) welcomed the august gathering. Principal Dr.P. Melba Mary presided over the function. Dr. G. Mahadevan (NSS, RRC & YRC Coordinator, Anna University – Tirunelveli Region) delivered the inaugural address. He explained the various activities of the NSS like national integration camp, immunisation, blood donation, planting trees, disaster management, providing medical facilities to villages, etc. Dr. I. Sundarapandi (Director – Admin, VV College of Engineering) provided the special address. He appreciated the students for joining the NSS and encouraged them to involve in blood donations, NSS camps, etc. RRC Program Officer Mr. I. Balasubramanian (Asst. Prof. Mechanical Engineering) delivered the vote of thanks. Management Representative Ms. T. S. Sundari, Professors, and NSS students participated in the function and contributed to the grand success of the NSS inauguration in the college.

ACTIVITIES: BLOOD DONATION CAMP (13.09.12)

VV College of Engineering organised a blood donation camp in its college premises on 13.9.12 (Thursday). Principal Dr. P. Melba Mary presided over the programme and explained the significance of blood donation to all the students. The camp was held in the presence of a team of doctors under Dr. Poomani Samuel from Tirunelveli Government Medical College, High Ground. Many students identified their blood groups and donated blood enthusiastically. NSS Program Officer Mr. A. Bright, YRC Program Officer Mr. S. G. Jebastin Andrews, and RRC Program Officer Mr. I. Bala Subramanian, had made all the arrangements. Director (Admin) Dr. I. Sundarapandi, Management Representative Ms. T. S. Sundari, Estate Officers Mr. Elango and Mr. Suresh, Physical Directors Mr. Suresh and Ms. Mercy, staff members and students facilitated the camp.

NSS SPECIAL CAMP(14.02.2013 to 20-02-2013) at Idachivilai Village, Arasoor Panchayat

HEALTHY YOUTH FOR WEALTHY INDIA

The seven day special camp lead by NSS unit , V V College of Engineering, Tisaiyanvilai was held during 14th February, 2013 to 20th February 2013. The major highlights of the camp were rural development programmes, Eye Care Camp, Animal Health Camp and conducting sports competitions. The personality development programmes, group discussions and games instilled joy and confidence in the NSS volunteers.

THURSDAY, 14th FEBRUARY

INAUGURATION OF SPECIAL CAMP

On Tuesday 14th February, 2013 NSS Special camp was inaugurated by the chief guest Mrs.I.Balambigai Jeyapandiyan , President, Arasoor Panchayat and presided over by Dr.P.Melba Mary , Principal, V V College of Engineering. Mrs.I.Balambigai Jeyapandiyan (President, Arasoor Panchayat ), Mr.Jeyapandian (Ex.President, Arasoor Panchayat ) and Mrs.L.Selvi (Vice-President, Arasoor Panchayat) were honoured by 'ponnadai' in the function.The inaugural ceremony came to an end by the vote of thanks delivered by Prof.I. Balasubramanian, RRC Programme Officer, V V College of Engineering.

FRIDAY,15thFEBRUARY

CLEANLINESS WORK AT MUTHARAMMAN TEMPLE ( 9.00 am to 12.30 pm)

Temple cleaning work was carried out by NSS Volunteers at Idachivilai village to understand cleanliness is godliness.

FREE VISION EYE SCREENING CAMP ( 1.00 Pm to 5.00 Pm)

Free eye camp was carried out for the villagers with the coordination of Vasan Eye Care, Tirunelveli Branch . Nearly five hundred villagers were examined. Prescription with necessary instructions and free medicines were given to them.

Speech on “ Healthy Youth For Wealthy India” (7.00 pm to 10.00 pm)

In the evening session, a speech on the topic 'Healthy Youth For Wealthy India' was conducted under the leadership of Prof.R.Rajasingh Rogland, Physical Director, Nazareth Margoschis College, Pillayanmanai.

SATURDAY, 16th FEBRUARY

ANIMAL HEALTH CAMP (9.00 am to 12.00 pm)

NSS Unit conducted Animal Health Camp at Idachivilai, Arasoor Panchayat. Wide publicity was given in the village a day in advance by NSS voluteers, so as to provide service to maximum number of animals. The local veterinary Assistant Surgeon Dr.Ganesan graced the occasion. In this clinical camp, hundreds of animals were examined and among these, sixty one animals were given the respective medicine treatment and sixteen animals were found suffering from reproductive diseases.

A speech on the topic 'Plastic Eradication' was conducted under the leadership of Prof. S.G.Jebastin Andrews, YRC Programme Officer, V V College of Engineering.

Speech on “ Environmental Cleanliness and Rain water Harvesting” (7.00 pm to 8.00 pm)

A speech on ‘Environmental Cleanliness and Rain water Harvesting’ conducted by Prof. I.Balasubramanian, RRC Programme officer, V V College of Engineering as part of the village development programme.

A speech on ‘National Integration’ conducted by Dr.Soosairai, Principal, St,Joseph B.Ed., College, Puthukula.

After the cultural events that followed, the programmes for the day ended at 10 pm. The day ended with the vote of thanks by one of the volunteers.

SUNDAY, 17th FEBRUARY

CLEANLINESS WORK AT SCHOOL ( 9.00 am to 12.30 pm)

NSS Unit conducted cleanliness work at TNDTA School and Playground at Idachivilai village. The NSS volunteers cleaned floor, campus and other premises to spread the message among the youngsters and the other villagers about the importance of maintaining cleanliness and hygienic conditions in the surroundings.

SPORTS COMPETITIONS (3.00 pm to 6.30 pm)

The sports competitions for the children, youth and aged people of the village was conducted. Everyone eagerly participated and enjoyed the games like volley ball, track&field events, football etc.

Speech on “Parent's role in the development of youngsters” (7.00 pm to 8.00 pm)

Heart holding speech on the topic 'Parent's role in the development of youngsters' was conducted under the leadership of Mr.A.Prince, Head Master, Saiva Prakasa Vidyasalai Middle school, Udangudi.

Speech on “Importance of Solar Energy”(8.00 pm to 9.00 pm)

This seminar was eminently and interestingly conducted by E.Manikandan and J.Godson(III EEE Students, VV College of Engineering). They explained about the benefits and importance of solar energy.

After the cultural events and programmes the day ended at 10.pm.

MONDAY, 18th FEBRUARY

CLEANLINESS WORK AT St. PETER'S CHURCH ( 9.00 am to 12.30 pm)

NSS Unit conducted cleanliness work at St. Peter's Church at Idachivilai village. The NSS volunteers cleaned floor, campus and other premises to spread the message among public about the importance of maintaining cleanliness and hygienic conditions in the surroundings.

Speech on “ Importance of Blood Donation”(3.00 pm to 4.00 pm)

In this session Prof.A.Bright ,NSS Programme officer,V V College of Engineering explained about 'Importance of Blood Donation and about National Service Scheme' to the NSS Volunteers and village people as part of the village development programme.

Special Address on “ Higher Education”(7.00 pm to 8.00 pm)

A Speech on the topic 'Higher Education' was conducted under the leadership of Dr.V.S.Srinivasan, HOD, Mechanical Engineering department, V V College of Engineering.

Talk on “Importance of Computer Education” (8.00 pm to 9.00pm)

A talk on ‘Importance of Computer Education’ conducted by Mr.Maheswaran (Vanavil TV) as part of the village development programme.

TUESDAY, 19th FEBRUARY

CLEAN AND GREEN “Tree Plantation”(9.00 am to 12.00 am)

NSS volunteers have participated actively in 'Tree Plantation' campaign in TNDTA school Campus at Idachivilai Village, saplings were planted in play ground and near the Library. More than 20 saplings were planted. Idachivilai Panchayat President & Vice President, School Head master, Church Pastor, Gardener of VV College of engineering graced the occasion.

SEMINAR “Self Improvement for students” (2.30 pm to 3.30 pm)

An inspiring talk on topic 'Self Improvement for Students' was given by Dr.R.Rajesh, English Department, V V College of engineering to the NSS Volunteers.

Valedictory Function of N.S.S Camp ( 5.30 pm to 10.00 pm)

The valedictory function of the NSS special camp was held in the presence of our respected Principal Dr.P.Melba Mary, Principal, V V College of Engineering. Mrs.I.Balambigai Jeyapandiyan (President, Arasoor Panchayat ) presided over the function. Welcome Speech was delivered by Prof.I.Balasubramanian, RRC Programme officer, V V College of Engineering. Special address was uttered by Dr.I.SundaraPandi, Director, V V College of Engineering. Prof.Asaithambi Dawson, NSS & YRC Programme officer , Nazareth Margoschis College, Pillayanmanai and Dr.S.Antony Selvakumar, HOD of Tamil Department, Nazareth Margoschis College, Pillayanmanai were the Guest of Honours at the function. They gave a speech about National Integration, social unity which was really thought provoking. Prizes were distributed by the Chief Guests to the villagers who performed well in the competitions conducted during the camp. There were many entertaining cultural programmes like dance, singing, mimicry etc. Vote of thanks was delivered by Prof.A.Bright ,NSS Programme officer, VV College of Engineering.

Post Camp Report

After the valedictory ceremony all the NSS volunteers gathered at the NSS office for a meeting to celebrate the success of the camp. Group pictures were taken. All of us were proud to be a part of this camp. The camp ended with a sense of satisfaction and scope for betterment. The Happiest People Are Not Those Getting More, But Those Giving More.

Free Solar Lamp Distribution by VV College of Engineering

Tisaiyanvilai, August, 17- V V M Educational Trust organized free solar lamp distribution programme to the school students in V V College of Engineering on 17.08.2013. RRC Programme officer Prof. I. Balasubramaniam welcomed the gathering. Principal Dr. P. Melba Mary presided over the function. She distributed free solar lamps to the poor school students and delivered the Presidential address. In her address she explicated the benefits of solar energy, compulsion for using solar energy, uses of solar lamp etc. College Director for admin Dr. I. Sundarapandi uttered special address. YRC Programme officer Prof. S. Jebastin Andrews proposed vote of thanks. About 100 poor school students who are in and around of Tisaiyanvilai got benefited by receiving the free solar lamps. NSS Programme Officer Prof. A. Bright coordinated the programme.

Report on ‘Sadbhavana Diwas’

V V College of Engineering observed ‘Sadbhavana Diwas’ from 21.08.2013 to 03.09.2013. Our college Principal Dr. P. Melba Mary initiated the Sadbhavana Pledge for promoting National integration and communal Harmony on 21.08.2013. Students about 1200 voiced out the Sadbhavana Pledge in each classroom.

Further we conducted quiz and skit on the theme of National integration and communal Harmony in view of ‘Communal Harmony Fortnight’ from 22.08.2013 to 02.09.2013.

On 22.08.2013 quiz competition was conducted with the central theme of non-violence, national leaders, peace and integration.

On 02.09.2013 skit programmes were conducted to make the students aware of the public issues and false faiths of the society and the need for national integration and social harmony. The Sadbhavana programme has been executed by NSS programme officer effectively
